Synchronous phase clustering in a network of neurons with spatially decaying excitatory coupling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Synchronization is studied in a spatially-distributed network of weeklycoupled, excitatory neurons of Hodgkin-Huxley type. All neurons are coupled to each other synaptically with a fixed time delay and a coupling strength inversely proportional to the distance between two neurons. We found that a robust, noise-resistant phase clustering state occurred regardless of the initial phase distribution. This has not been shown in previous studies where similar clustering states were found only when the coupling was inhibitory. The spatial distribution of neurons in each synchronous cluster is determined by the spatial distribution of the coupling strength. Phase-interaction properties of the model neurons in the network are used to explain why can such a clustering state be robust. PACS numbers: 87.18 Sn, 87.19 La, 05.40 -a Typeset using REVTEX

A neural mass model of CA1-CA3 neural network and studying sharp wave ripples
We spend one third of our life in sleep. The interesting point about the sleep is that the neurons are not quiescent during sleeping and they show synchronous oscillations at different regions. Especially sharp wave ripples are observed in the hippocampus. Here, we propose a simple phenomenological neural mass model for the CA1-CA3 network of the hippocampus considering the spike frequency adap...
متن کاملEffect of Coupling Types on Synchronization of Weakly Coupled Bursting Neurons
Weak coupling connections are ubiquitous in neuronal system. For neurons with both spiking and bursting dynamics, bursting synchronization, which has been found to be related with a number of abnormal brain rhythms, is easier to occur at smaller synaptic strengths. In this paper, we examine the effect of the synaptic types on the synchronization properties of the weakly coupled bursting neurona...
متن کاملSpatially Localized Synchronous Oscillations in Synaptically Coupled Neuronal Networks: Conductance-based Models and Discrete Maps
We study the qualitative behavior of localized synchronous oscillations organized by synaptic inhibition in two types of spatially extended neuronal network models driven by a time-independent, localized excitatory input. Each network is formulated as a one-dimensional network of conductancebased models constituting a high-dimensional dynamical system of nonlocal differential equations. Althoug...
متن کاملContinuous and lurching traveling pulses in neuronal networks with delay and spatially decaying connectivity.
Propagation of discharges in cortical and thalamic systems, which is used as a probe for examining network circuitry, is studied by constructing a one-dimensional model of integrate-and-fire neurons that are coupled by excitatory synapses with delay. Each neuron fires only one spike. The velocity and stability of propagating continuous pulses are calculated analytically. Above a certain critica...
متن کاملSynchronization in Neuronal Networks with Electrical and Chemical Coupling
Synchronized cortical activities in the central nervous systems of mammals are crucial for sensory perception, coordination, and locomotory function. The neuronal mechanisms that generate synchronous synaptic inputs in the neocortex are far from being fully understood. This thesis contributes toward an understanding of the emergence of synchronization in networks of bursting neurons as a highly...
